Carla’s musical musings began at an early age with piano and church choir. She fell in love with the beat of the drums and began studying Cuban and West African styles. In 1994, she joined Beat Stew, an all drum ensemble. Their repertoire consisted of traditional West African drum rhythms that instigated her first of many travels to West Africa to continue her studies. She joined the Diane Patterson Sextet, which later became the Diane Patterson Xtet, and toured around Northern California. Other collaborative beat projects include an instructional Drum Circle DVD, and the great fortune to play with groups including Clan Dyken, Mejor Que Nada, Delta Head Trip, Duval Speck, the Deering Coretet, and most recently, Yolo Mambo. Her percussion set-up includes many eclectic sound-making devices from her world travels.
